Building the sides of the pew bench

Building the sides of the pew bench

The first step of the woodworking is to build the sides of the bench. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to build the legs out of 2×2 lumber and the supports out of 1×6 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs using 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Check if the corners are square and add glue to the joints.

Continue the project by attaching the 3/4″ plywood panels to the sides of the bench. Fit the panels into place and secure them to the braces by using 1 1/4″ screws.

The next step of the woodworking project is to lock the sides of the bench together. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs, as described in the diagram. Make sure the corners are square and make decorative cuts to the front support.

Cut a piece of 3/4″ plywood and drill pocket holes along the side edges, as described in the diagram. Fit the back of the bench into place and secure it to the frame by using 1 1/4″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints and remove the excess., before continuing the process.

Attach the 3/4′ plywood panel to the front of the bench, as in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the panel and secure it to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws.

Next, fit the 1×2 seat supports to the structure, as described in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs of the bench. Add glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Cut a piece of 3/4″ plywood and secure it to the supports. Make sure you leave no gaps between the components and smooth the exposed edges with sandpaper. Make sure you countersink the head of the screws.

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the 1×2 trims to the top of the bench. Align the trims with attention and lock them int place with glue and finishing nails. Smooth the edges with fine-grit-sandpaper.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours. Next, smooth the surface along the wood grain, using medium-grit sandpaper.
