Types of Child Care in New York City

You can find and compare the types of child care programs listed below on NYC Child Care Connect. Each of these programs are regulated according to the City Health Code.

Group Child Care (Center-based)

Location: Any location, except a residence
Ages: Up to 6 years old
Size: At least three children.

Performance Summary Card: Every group child care program must have a performance summary card from the Health Department displayed near its entrance. The card includes information on the program's staff, maximum number of children allowed and violations.

Location: An established school. May be located elsewhere, but associated with a school.
Ages: 3–5 years old
Size: At least six children.

Location: Any location, except a residence
Ages: Up to 15 years old
Size: At least 10 children

You can find and compare the types of child care programs listed below on State’s Office of Children and Family Services page. Each of these programs are regulated according to State Social Services Law.

Family Day Care

Location: A private residence
Ages: 6 weeks–12 years old
Size: Up to eight children.

Group-family Day Care

Location: A private residence
Ages: 6 weeks–12 years old
Size: Up to 16 children

School-age Child Care

Location: School or private business
Ages: Kindergarten through 12 years old
Size: Seven or more children

Unregulated Programs

You can also place your child in Informal Child Care. These programs are usually located in a private residence. They are unregulated, with no qualification requirements for operators. They are available for up to two children of all ages.
